Belmont Barber Chairs: Taking Over the Industry with Innovation

Originating from Japan, Belmont barber chair first entered the global market in the 50s and has not looked back since. It has become the most dominating company in the barber equipment industry.

From Japan to the global market, Belmont barber chairs have evolved and grown vastly over the course of nearly a century. Surviving and thriving in a highly competitive market against heavyweights such as Koken and Paidar, the company has one of the richest histories. This article will discuss the history of Belmont barber chairs along with some of their most promising models.

History of Belmont Barber Chairs

Going by the name Takara Belmont currently, the company started as a foundry. In 1931, the company advanced into the hairdressing and beauty field. Later, started manufacturing barber chair on the model of the product of Koken manufacturing company in the USA. For the next 30 years, they continued to grow and expanded their business overseas.

Their barber chair, marketed as Belmont barber chairs, first appeared in the Japanese market in 1930. In 1950 they marked their entrance to the US with their barber chair. In the same decade, they marketed they released their first hydraulic chair. Even though they entered a highly competitive market in the US, they still managed to grab the market by offering improved and innovative technologies in their products at a more reasonable price compared to the already-existing companies. Starting their business with practically no share in the market, they took advantage of their lower manufacturing cost and access to less expensive suppliers. They took their competitors Koken and Paidar by surprise when they released their Belmont chairs with higher quality than them. It ultimately led the barbershop owners to make a switch to Belmont chairs.

In an attempt to regain the market, Koken and Paidar appealed to the government to increase the import levy on Takara company's chairs — that was eventually rejected. In 1969, Takara Belmont acquired the struggling St. Louis based Koken Inc. The purchase included Koken's trademarks, patents, and the brand name itself. By the end of the decade, Takara Belmont company took over 70% of the market, ultimately making Paidar a small competitor.
