Even though hairdressing tools vary depending on the service types and styles, there are fundamentals that you can find in every hairdresser’s kit.

If you’re seeking a career as an aspiring hairdresser, you need to know all about the fundamentals. We suggest that you do your homework before investing in any tools because, after all, it’s your business that is at stake. But to make your journey easier, we have listed 10 must-have tools that every hairdresser needs.

  • All-purpose Shears

The standard size of shears varies between 5.5 inches to 6.5 inches. While a smaller shear of 5.5 inches is for precision cutting, a longer shear between 6 to 7 inches is ideal for big cuts like compressed cutting, large sections, and deep texturing. A longer shear also saves time for larger chops or applying the scissor-over-comb technique. There are also shears that are in-between a large shear and a smaller shear which is perfect for pretty much any hair cuts.

  • Blending Shears

Hairdressers mainly use blending shears for removing weight, adding controlled texture, or softening lines. Also, going by the name thinning shear, this versatile tool has comb-like teeth on one side and a blunt blade on the other. Thinning shears are a must-have tool for any hairstylist to add weight balance within a shape in a short amount of time.

  • Styling Products

Shampoo, conditioner, and other styling products are essential to wash and style clients’ hair. As a hairdresser, you should have access to a variety of products suited for all hair types.

  • Hairdryers

A hairdresser’s kit isn’t complete without a hairdryer. You should go for a lightweight build that won’t fatigue you at the end of the day. Additionally, a blow dryer with the latest technology will speed up the drying process and reduce damage.

  • Curling Iron

A thicker curling iron is a versatile tool that can create a variety of hairstyles. You can wrap the hair around the barrel in different techniques to get curls ranging all the way from loose to polished.

  • Combs

A variety of combs are mandatory for different purposes, such as creating clean sections for cutting, styling or coloring hair. A comb set with distinctive teeth gaps and shapes is an absolute necessity for any hairdressing kit.

  • Brushes

Two primary types of brushes that are must-haves for a hairstylist are paddling brushes and round brushes. Paddling brushes come in handy for quickly detangling hair or blow-drying a large section of hair. On the contrary, a round brush is non-negotiable for perfect blowouts. You can find different sizes of round brushes, each with its own specialty.

  • Sectioning Clip

Clips are useful for sectioning the hair for coloring, cutting, and styling. Look for a clip that provides maximum grip on dry hair but does not leave marks. A sound quality clip can be used both in wet and dry hair without leaving creases and lines.

  • Spray Bottle

Most styling techniques require wetting the hair, for which a conveniently shaped spray bottle is a must. A good spray bottle will mist the hair lightly and evenly. You can also find continuous spray options in newer ones that are available.

  • Straightener

Even though a blow dryer can double as a straightener, it is an excellent addition to your hairdressing kit if you can spare some budget. Straighteners can build foundations for long-lasting hairdos or add texture for thicker braids. With this one tool, you will be able to offer a whole range of services to your customers.

  • Chair

Last but not least is your salon chair. The chair you choose is important because it will be the vehicle to drive you to success. It's important to purchase a chair that fits the needs of your services, you can read more about salon chairs here.

With the range of services, a hairdresser may need more equipment. Understanding the necessity and setting a reasonable budget will help you set up a successful hairstyling business. Considering quality is another crucial aspect of choosing hairdresser equipment that will set the tone of your business to your customers.
